Kemin earnes Global Food Safety Initiative certification for Iowa facility

From farm to fork, food safety is critical in today’s global food supply chain. According to a 2012 study by the International Food Information Council, nearly 85 percent of Americans admit to giving thought to the safety of their food over the past year.

From farm to fork, food safety is critical in today’s global food supply chain. According to a 2012 study by the International Food Information Council, nearly 85 percent of Americans admit to giving thought to the safety of their food over the past year.

Kemin, understanding the importance of high consumer confidence and the impact of the Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Modernization Act, spent the past three years investing human and financial capital necessary to certify its Des Moines, Iowa, manufacturing facility for the Food Safety System Certification 22000:2010. The certification is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative as a rigorous food safety management system, certified by approved third-party organizations. The certification covers the manufacturing of food ingredients used in further processing and is designed to deliver greater confidence in food, fewer health risks, lower auditing costs, improved protection for brands and improved supply chain management.

Although the Global Food Safety Initiative recognized certifications are considered a quality standard for the food industry, this recognition is unique for a feed ingredient manufacturer. This certification serves as documented reinforcement of the company’s commitment to quality and safety. Other facilities with Food Safety System Certification 22000:2010 status include the company’s plant extraction facility in Des Moines as well as all food ingredients manufactured in its facility in Herentals, Belgium. Additionally, in September 2010, Kemin was the first company to receive the FAMI QS/International Safe Feed/Safe Food certificate for its facility in Des Moines, Iowa.

“Consumer safety is paramount,” said Dr. Chris Nelson, president and CEO of Kemin Industries. “This certification gives our customers peace of mind that Kemin delivers on its promise to provide quality, safe ingredients. It also validates our role as the market leader in food safety.”

The Des Moines manufacturing facility makes over 250 ingredients used in animal agriculture nutrition as well as the food and pet food industries. “Incorporating quality and safety into every aspect of our business is our number one priority,” said Kristi Krafka, vice president of regulatory affairs and quality assurance. “This level of quality and food safety certification reinforces Kemin’s commitment to providing only the highest quality products.”

Many steps are taken daily to assure the safety of Kemin products:

  • Securing a continuous safe supply of raw materials by monitoring suppliers, partners and contractors to ensure good manufacturing practices are in place.
  • Rigorous quality and safety testing of raw materials and finished products ensure they meet specifications and are safe for consumption.
  • Focus on food safety practices through employee involvement and training.

Kemin provides “inspired molecular solutions” specifically developed to provide nutrition and health benefits for humans and animals. Committed to feed and food safety, Kemin maintains top-of-the-line manufacturing facilities where approximately 500 specialty ingredients are made for the global feed and food industries as well as the health, nutrition and beauty markets.
