Embedding sustainability into everyday broiler operations rather than treating it than a separate initiative delivers both environmental impacts and economic returns.
“One of the ultimate skills of sustainability is trying to find the levers that improve farmer and rancher productivity as well as good for the bottom line. If you’re not improving the bottom line, then it’s never going to get implemented,” Sarah Fox, U.S. senior director sustainable food systems, JBS, said.
Fox will explain how JBS and its U.S. subsidiary, Pilgrim’s, are implementing ideas and solutions that provide economical and practical means of reducing resource usage and lowering environmental impacts at the 2025 Chicken Marketing Summit, scheduled for July 28-30, 2025 at the DeSoto Savannah in Savannah, Georgia.

The JBS sustainability strategy
JBS and Pilgrim’s are currently prioritizing scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions, concentrating their efforts on facility-level improvements including energy optimization, water conservation and waste reduction, which allows for immediate implementation and measurable results.
However, Fox is most excited about the component of their sustainability strategy which targets scope 3 emissions, which represent the majority of the broiler industry’s environmental impact. This primarily involves feed production, an area that requires extensive supply chain collaboration. These landscape-scale projects engage grain and feed producers in comprehensive partnerships designed to reduce environmental impact while supporting farmer operations from farm to fork.
The key to success lies in identifying initiatives that simultaneously improve environmental performance and enhance profitability for both producers and the company, Fox said. This dual-benefit approach ensures long-term viability and adoption of sustainable practices. The strategy recognizes that sustainability measures must deliver bottom-line improvements to achieve widespread implementation across the supply chain.
