Research shows coconut co-product has potential for aquafeeds

In the Philippines, a byproduct of coconut oil production — copra meal — is showing promise for inclusion in farmed fish and shrimp after an additional processing step.

Locally produced coconut byproduct has the potential to replace expensive imported soybean meal for the aquaculture sector in the Philippines.

Protein-enriched copra meal (PECM) can reduce aquafeed costs and improve fish health, according to the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, DOST-PCAARRD.
