Is it possible to formulate animal feed without soybean meal?

Given ongoing developments in the European Union and other regions, it has become increasingly relevant among animal nutrition circles to ask if it is possible to formulate animal feed without soybean meal.

During the past few months, I’ve received inquiries from contacts in the feed industry about the feasibility of soybean-free diets. While the short and easy answer is a definitive “Yes,” the more nuanced reality is far from straightforward. Soybean meal has long been a cornerstone of animal feed due to its exceptional protein content, digestibility and amino acid profile. Replacing it presents challenges and opportunities, requiring strategic adjustments and a very good understanding soybean meal is considered the premium vegetable protein source.
