Latest reports from the northeast Indian state of Nagaland record the presence of the African swine fever (ASF) virus detected in the Kohima district.
Virus-positive cases have been confirmed in three villages, according to Northeast Today. District authorities have specified a 1-kilometer infected zone and a 10-kilometer surveillance zone around the outbreaks, and imposed restrictions on the movement of live pigs and pork products within, into or out of the designated zones.
Last week, ASF outbreaks were confirmed in domestic swine in the state’s Noklak district.
ASF developments in Southeast Asia
One town in the Philippines’ province of Negros Oriental has lifted restrictions on the trading of live hogs and pig meat, reported the official Philippine News Agency at the end of last week. Owners in the town of Valencia can now have their pigs transported to the slaughterhouse, providing they first obtain a certificate proving the animals free of ASF.
Negros Oriental province is part of the Negros Island Region, which has been hard hit by ASF in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, the same source reports that, in the Bicol Region on the island of Luzon, the authorities in ASF-free Albay province have banned the importation of hogs and pork products from neighboring Camarines Sur, where active outbreaks are ongoing.
New cases detected in East Asia
Last week, Focus Taiwan reported that shipments of pig meat and processed pork products from the Kinmen island area to the rest of Taiwan had been suspended for one week.
The move came after confirmation of ASF infection in the carcass of a domestic pig that appeared to have washed up on a Kinmen beach. Already in place was a ban on the movement of live pigs from Kinmen.
This is the third time that an ASF-infected carcass has been found on Kinmen this year, and it brings to 23 the number of these cases since 2018. Official checks on all farms within 10 kilometers have revealed no signs of ill health in pigs.
In South Korea, just one ASF case in a wild boar was detected during the month of August, according to Pig People.
4 European states confirm new cases in domestic pigs
In the week to August 26, 24 further ASF outbreaks affecting farmed swine were recorded in three of the region’s countries. This total covers 18 affected herds in Romania, four in Moldova and two in Poland.
This is according to the Animal Disease Information System. This database from the European Commission (EC) monitors selected listed animal diseases in European Union (EU) member states and some adjacent countries.
These latest outbreaks bring the number of confirmed outbreaks in this population so far this year to 659 in 12 countries. These compare with 940 and 13, respectively, for the whole of 2025, according to the same source.
To date in 2026, Romania has recorded the most outbreaks at 270, followed by Serbia (194) and Croatia (130), whose figures are unchanged from seven days previously.
Further details about ASF outbreaks are included in notifications to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) from the national veterinary agencies.
Over the past week, Serbia’s authority has retrospectively reported a further 65 ASF outbreaks, all of which started during the latter half of June. Directly impacted as a result of mortality or preventative culling were approximately 1,770 pigs. All those animals affected were in backyard herds located in the central area around the capital, Belgrade, and three adjacent districts to the west.
In the period August 20-28, presence of the ASF virus was confirmed in four small backyard herds in Moldova, according to the latest WOAH report. Of these, three were located on the western margins of the Central Region, and one in Northern Region. These bring Moldova’s total outbreaks in domestic pigs so far this year to 24, based on this source.
Latest update from Poland’s chief veterinary inspectorate puts the nation’s total outbreaks in this population to date in 2026 at seven.
Wild boar cases in Europe pass 6,400 this year
Latest update of the EC’s system (August 26) puts the number of confirmed ASF outbreaks in the wild population at 6,430 in 18 states in 2026.
Over the previous seven days, 75 additional outbreaks had been registered with the EC by 10 countries. These included 20 new outbreaks in Germany, and 11 in each of Finland, Latvia and Poland.
So far this year, Poland’s total is the highest at 1,607, and next come Italy (1,068), Lithuania (unchanged at 851), Germany (699) and Hungary (602).
In Italy, a first case of ASF has been confirmed in a wild boar in the Rome area, according to a recent notification to WOAH. This is the first infection in the Lazio region after a prolonged hiatus.
Finland became the latest European country to record its first case of ASF at the end of July.
A further 10 cases in the Finnish wild boar population were reported to WOAH in the past week. Until now, all the country’s cases were infected wild boar carcasses or remains found with a 5-kilometer area in Finland’s southeasternmost municipality, Virolahti, and near to the border with Russia.
However, last week, remains of an adult wild boar found in a field in Pyhtää municipality tested positive for the ASF virus. According to the Finnish Food Authority, this location is 40 kilometers west of the previously designated infected zone.
Update on ASF situation in Africa
In the period July 20 to August 14, domestic pigs at three small farms in South Africa tested positive for the ASF virus, based on a recent WOAH notification.
Directly affected in total were just over 300 animals at two locations in Gauteng, and one in North West.
In this disease outbreak series, which began in April 2019, 238 swine herds have been affected by the disease.
Meanwhile in East Africa, ASF appears to be spreading across Kenya. By mid-August, cases had been recorded in domestic pigs in seven counties, according to Press Reader.
