DSM-Firmenich and China Modern Dairy Holdings Ltd., a dairy farming operator and raw milk producer in China, have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance sustainability of Chinese dairy farming through the implementation of Bovaer. This is the first such agreement in China.
Bovaer is the most extensively studied and scientifically proven solution to the challenge of lowering livestock’s methane emissions. In the dairy sector, methane is the most common and powerful greenhouse gas and is mainly generated in the digestive tracts of cows, released when the animals burp. Through the implementation of Bovaer, methane emissions can be reduced by approximately 30% for dairy.
In November 2023, China launched its Methane Emission Control Action Plan, aimed at significantly reducing methane emissions across sectors, including agriculture, in China. As a leading dairy producer in China, China Modern Dairy Holdings is supporting the implementation of this action plan across its operations, by supplying milk with a lower environmental footprint to customers like China Mengniu Dairy, a top 10 global dairy company.

The collaboration with Modern Dairy will help us to tailor our offering and go-to-market model for the Chinese market, and we are happy to work with the industry leaders on this topic. Preparation work will start now, while we await local market authorization for commercialization.”
Bovaer is commercially available in 65 countries including EU member states, the U.K., U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, most of Latin America and select other markets.
