African swine fever hits more herds in Europe, Asia

As Italy and Slovakia record their first outbreaks of African swine fever in farmed pigs of 2026, more cases in wild boar are reported widely across Europe.

Over the past week, further outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) have been confirmed in domestic pigs in three European countries. Meanwhile, the disease situation has been declared “resolved” in this population in three provinces of Poland.

To date in 2026, nine states in the region have recorded a total of 123 ASF outbreaks on commercial or backyard units, according to the Animal Disease Information System (as of May 6). This database from the European Commission (EC) monitors selected listed animal diseases in European Union (EU) member states and adjacent countries.
