Spike in ASF outbreaks in the Philippines

While the Southeast Asian state is recording more cases of African swine fever (ASF) than at the same time last year, new cases affecting domestic pigs are also reported in Vietnam, as well as central and eastern Europe, and Africa.

The latest update from the authorities in the Philippines point to a sharp increase in African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in the nation’s pigs in recent weeks.

Active cases in pigs were reported in 12 of the nation’s 18 regions, according to the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) on September 4. This is one more than the previous edition dated August 21, as the disease appears to have re-emerged in the Cagayan Valley region on Luzon. Meanwhile, the number of provinces with outbreaks increased from 18 to 29 over the same period.
