Food waste blamed for Taiwan’s only ASF outbreak

Investigations into the territory’s only outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) so far point to poorly processed food waste as the source of the virus, while two members of the farm family are being held by officials amid other related allegations.

Investigations after the confirmation of Taiwan’s first ASF outbreak last month appear to identify the source of the virus as incorrectly processed food waste. Directly impacted were approximately 300 pigs at a farm in the Taichung city area.
