At a farm in Vietnam, reproductive problems and other health issues appear to have been linked to a novel African swine fever (ASF) virus variant. This is according to a paper published recently in Nature Scientific Reports by first-named author Thanh Che Nguyen of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.
Issues were observed at the unit after the introduction of a large number of replacement gilts to the breeding herd. While the gilts showed no more than mild symptoms, high rate of abortion occurred in the mature sows. In lactating sows, severe ulceration was observed on the udder, spreading to other areas of the skin.
