Keeping up with artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging digital technologies is crucial to advancing poultry production and processing.

“Artificial intelligence is being used more and more,” Gordon Butland, director, G&S Agriconsultant, said. “But it worries me more (that it is) not being adopted by a large part of the poultry world.”

At the 2023 Poultry Tech Summit, Butland will give the keynote presentation addressing where the future of the digital frontier for the poultry industry is, where it could go and challenges facing the adoption of new technologies.

The Poultry Tech Summit, scheduled for November 6-8 at the Hilton Atlanta Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, focuses on the transition of innovative technologies into commercial applications to advance the poultry industry.

Ensuring technology buy-in

The first step to advancing the digital frontier of the poultry industry is understanding what advances in technology can bring.

“There’s not enough people that understand data science and the chicken industry,” Butland said.

That means investing in the next generation.

“One of the things I’m looking for is that the universities that have vet and animal husbandry segments include a bit more of it. They don’t have to be able to do the high statistics, but they’ve got to know what it is,” he added.

When it comes to those currently working in the industry, Butland isn’t worried about the bigger operations. Instead, his concern lies with smaller poultry integrators or those located in less affluent parts of the world.

“Unless someone stands up and then becomes what I call the champion, it doesn’t happen,” Butland explained.
