African swine fever re-emerges in Spain

After a hiatus of more than 30 years, African swine fever (ASF) virus has been detected again in Spain in two wild boar. Elsewhere in Europe, the disease has hit more backyard pigs in some Balkan states, and South Korea has recorded its first cases on a farm for two months.

Last week, two wild boar tested positive for the African swine fever (ASF) virus in Spain — the country’s first cases since 1994.

The infected animals were found dead less than 2 kilometers apart in Barcelona province in the northeastern region of Catalonia, according to the official notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Locations of both carcasses appear to be near the Autonomous University of Barcelona in the city’s municipality of Bellaterra. Source of the virus is unknown.
