Algal oil production to grow 80% by 2030

Fish oil price volatility has boosted demand for algal oil — an expensive but more reliable alternative, think tank says.

Algal oil production is set to expand significantly over the next few years in the face of growing fish oil shortages, according to a first-of-its-kind report by The Center for Feed Innovation.

According to the report, global algal oil production hit 20,000 metric tons in 2025, and capacity should grow to 36,000 metric tons by 2030. Demand for omega-3 oils is expected to exceed supply by 100,000 metric tons in the same time period.
