Innovation creates reliable, long-term storage for BSF larvae

Patented units allow black soldier fly producers to create a bank of larvae.

Scientists at Texas A&M AgriLife Research have patented the first reliable method for long-term, room-temperature storage of young black soldier fly (BSF) larvae.

The BSF billet, as it’s called, is a “game changer” for the industry, according to Jeffery Tomberlin, a Texas A&M AgriLife Research Fellow, professor in the Texas A&M Department of Entomology and director of the Center for Insect Biomanufacturing and Innovation.
