Sensor technology could lead to earlier detection of fires in poultry houses, preventing bird loss and reducing insurance costs for the industry.

“It’s not only an alarm feature, but it also responds to the emergency and can start making decisions before the human has a chance to make that decision,” Brandon Mulnix, director, commercial accounts, Prism Controls, said.

At the 2023 Poultry Tech Summit, Mulnix will present technology that can react to the earliest stages of fire, reduce the source of the fire, reduce the oxygen needed to fuel the fire and notify resources to address the cause of the fire at the maintenance level.

The Poultry Tech Summit, scheduled for November 6-8 at the Hilton Atlanta Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, focuses on the transition of innovative technologies into commercial applications to advance the poultry industry.

Registration for this event is now open. Early bird savings are available until September 29th.

Smoke particle detection

The sensor technology, which has been deployed at tested in layer barns, uses air sampling to detect smoke. Once the system detects smoke particles, it alerts the farm manager to potential danger and can even call the local fire department.

“This is a technology that we want to continue to prove out in different types of barns,” he explained, noting that they hope to expand into broiler houses.

Reducing insurance costs

Business interruptions from fires in the agricultural industry are driving up insurance costs to the point some farms may be uninsurable in the future. The cost of a fire event isn’t just affecting the farm that the event occurs at, but also the size of the claims raises the cost of premiums for all farms.

“It also falls into a real-world problem of insurability. Today’s farms are really struggling to be reinsured at an affordable rate,” Mulnix added.

In the future, he hopes that insurance companies will consider giving discounts to poultry operations that use technology to reduce the risk of fires.
