Mars, Inc. has opened a new $450 million Royal Canin dry pet food facility in Lewisburg, Ohio, U.S. — said to be the brand’s largest factory worldwide. The 450,000-square-foot site is expected to create up to 270 new jobs over the next five years and produce enough pet food to feed approximately 4 million cats and dogs annually.

This expansion contributes to Mars' larger investment strategy, which includes over $6 billion invested in U.S.-based manufacturing over the past five years. The company currently operates 37 U.S. factories and employs more than 70,000 people nationwide.

Commitment to domestic manufacturing

“Our latest investment in Ohio is an important milestone in Mars’ ongoing commitment to U.S.-based manufacturing,” said Poul Weihrauch, CEO of Mars, Inc. “Over the last five years, we invested over $6 billion in the U.S., and we plan to continue to grow our ability to supply the domestic market. The Royal Canin facility in Lewisburg provides an important opportunity to further Mars' science-based innovation while supporting a community of people and pets that has long been a part of the Mars family.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also praised the development. “The decision by Royal Canin and parent company Mars to locate in Ohio represents a significant vote of confidence in Ohio's business environment, our talented, highly trained workforce and our outstanding quality of life," he noted.

Focus on scale and sustainability

Designed with standardized systems and manufacturing processes used across other Royal Canin locations, the Lewisburg facility can produce the brand’s full regional dry kibble portfolio. It is also the first Royal Canin site to earn Silver LEED certification, recognizing its environmentally responsible construction and operations.

“The investment made into our Lewisburg site continues to represent the growth of the pet nutrition industry and the evolving needs of our pets and their owners,” said Daryn Brown, regional president, Royal Canin North America. “We’re proud to expand and scale our capabilities to provide tailored nutrition to our North American market and continue expanding our presence within Lewisburg and Preble County.”

According to Petfood Industry's Top Pet Food companies, Mars Petcare is a division of Mars, Inc. that focuses on providing veterinary care, nutrition, and other services for pets. It is a global company with over 100,000 associates in more than 130 countries.
