Mississippi poultry, eggs top agriculture commodities in 2012
Mississippi's agricultural commodities reached $7.3 billion in total estimated value in 2012, with poultry and eggs the top commodity at $2.53 billion, according to Mississippi State University agricultural economists. The $7.3 billion represents a 9.4-percent increase over 2011 numbers.

A drought in India is expected to create a shortage of coarse grains used in animal feed, according to the chief of the country's weather office, resulting in a feed shortage during a time when growing demand for poultry and dairy products is increasing domestic use and affecting exports. An import duty on oil-cake has been waived to ease supplies to the feed and edible oil industries.

Poultry, livestock coalition urges Congress to reform Renewable Fuels Standard
In response to a new economic study on the impact of corn ethanol production on food prices and commodity price volatility, a coalition of poultry and livestock groups is urging the U.S. Congress to reform the federal Renewable Fuels Standard, which mandates the amount of ethanol that must be produced annually. Nutreco revenue up 11 percent from 2011
Nutreco reported revenue of €1.13 billion in the first quarter of 2012, up 11.3 percent from the first quarter of 2011, according to the company's latest financial statement. Revenue was mostly driven by volume growth of 6.8 percent, said the report.

Chr. Hansen posts €30 million profit for second quarter 2011/2012
Chr. Hansen posted €30.4 million (US$39.8 million) in net profit in the company's second quarter ending February 29, an increase from the €24.5 million (US$32.1 million) earned in the second quarter of the 2010/2011 fiscal year, according to Chr. Hansen's latest financial report. The company saw organic growth in both its cultures and enzymes division (9 percent) and its health and nutrition division (11 percent) in the second quarter, but saw a drop in its natural colors division (3 percent).

Land O'Lakes reported net earnings of $182.2 million in 2011, compared to $178.1 million in 2010, according to the company's latest annual report. Earnings increased in layers and declined in feed, crop inputs and dairy foods. Lifestyle feed volume declined 5 percent, although premium, branded products performed well, said the company.
