Sow milk-based nutrition can promote piglet feed intake

Although most piglet milk flavors are modeled after cow’s milk, research findings point to the fact that the physiological mismatch between cow’s milk and sow’s milk is substantial.

In recent years, the scientific community and commercial sector have increasingly acknowledged the biological and behavioral complexities of feed intake in piglets.

One of the most critical challenges remains the abrupt weaning process, which often results in post-weaning growth check, gastrointestinal distress and increased morbidity. To address this, academic researchers and commercial entities have begun shifting attention from cow milk analogs to formulations that more accurately mimic the olfactory and gustatory profile of sow’s milk – an approach supported by recent advances in sensory biology and patent-protected flavor technologies.
