The Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER) has introduced a set of life cycle assessment (LCA) resources to help the pet food and animal feed industries evaluate their environmental impacts. Developed with the Context Network and the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada (ANAC), the tools aim to guide companies through LCA processes, facilitate internal alignment, and identify strategic opportunities.

“IFEEDER is committed to providing practical tools and resources to support sustainability efforts across our industry,” said Lara Moody, IFEEDER executive director. “With the increasing interest in LCAs, these new materials provide actionable resources for companies that are interested in pursuing LCAs for their products.”

An LCA systematically evaluates the environmental effects of a product’s lifecycle, offering insights for product development, benchmarking, improvement areas and strategic planning. The resources include:

  • LCA Process Overview: A guide to LCA purposes, processes, and outcomes, including ISO standards review.
  • LCA Glossary: Key terms and concepts to help companies understand LCA terminology.
  • Industry Member Insights: Findings from U.S. and Canadian industry members about LCA trends, challenges, and drivers.
  • LCA Decision Tree: A guide addressing key questions about LCA value, strategy, and prioritization.
  • LCA Landscape Mapping and Profiles: A detailed map of stakeholders and their roles in the LCA ecosystem.

The toolkit is available for free to members of the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) and IFEEDER donors via the IFEEDER website. ANAC members can request free access, while nonmembers can purchase it for $995 from AFIA’s online store.
