55 years of Feed & Grain: Safety progress

A look at the significantly different safety environment for grain handling facilities in 1969.

In celebration of Feed & Grain magazine’s 55th anniversary in 2024, each edition of Feed & Grain will look at the issue’s theme through the lens of 1969. Grain handling safety is the focus for this issue.

Fifty-five years ago, grain elevators and storage bins looked and operated much the same as they do today. In fact, the modern grain elevator was invented in the mid-19th century. In 1900, the first concrete grain elevator was built -- The Peavey-Haglin Experimental Concrete Grain Elevator  -- and, by 1969, leading agricultural construction companies, such as Todd & Sargent Inc., had begun offering slip-formed concrete grain elevator designs.
