Gradual spread of ASF among Europe’s domestic pigs

Further outbreaks of African swine fever have occurred in six European countries, hitting commercial farms in Estonia, Croatia and Serbia; also affected are pigs at an encampment in South Africa, while there appears to be a lull in the disease situation in Asia.

Throughout the past week, six countries in central and eastern Europe have recorded further cases of African swine fever (ASF) in their domestic swine populations. However, the number of new premises affected in each case continues to be generally low.

In the Baltic state of Estonia, presence of the ASF virus was detected around one week ago at a farm in Jögeva — a county in the east of the country. This is according to the latest notification from the nation’s animal health agency to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The test was carried out after two of the 651 animals at the farm showed signs of the disease.
