Consultation opens in England, Wales on animal proteins in feed

The administration for these areas of Great Britain are seeking views on the possible future inclusion of specified processed animal proteins (PAP) in feeds for poultry and pigs.

This week, the United Kingdom (U.K.) government’s agriculture department Defra announced it has opened a consultation on feed controls for monogastric animals.

With the emergence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the U.K. in the 1980s, a ban was put in place on the inclusion of meat and bone meal and other processed animal proteins (PAP) in animal feeds in the country. This was later extended to cover all transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE).
