State-private initiative to boost forage production in Nigeria

After a successful pilot project in the West Africa state, cultivation of alfalfa is being scaled up through a new initiative. As well as providing high-protein pellets and hay for livestock, the crop is bringing social benefits, and it is tolerant of local climatic conditions.

A new initiative in Nigeria’s northern state of Jigawa aims to expand the area used for the cultivation of alfalfa (also known as lucerne, Medicago sativa).

A high-protein and drought-tolerant forage crop, alfalfa can help support the expansion of milk production locally and elsewhere in the West African country, as well as having export potential.
