Cargill gives $150,000 for PED virus feed research
As the firstanniversary of confirmation of the porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus in theUnited States nears, the National Pork Board continues to build an arsenal ofinformation based on its nearly $2 million in Pork Checkoff-funded researchfunded to date. This work will be aided by a decision by Cargill's animal nutritionand pork businesses to donate $150,000 for additional PED virus researchdirected by the National Pork Board.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that, sinceit announced final Guidance for Industry #213 in December 2013, all but oneanimal drug company have committed in writing to seek withdrawal of approvalsfor any production uses of affected drug applications and change the remainingtherapeutic uses of their products from over-the-counter (OTC) to use byVeterinary Feed Directive (VFD) or prescription.On December 11, 2013, the FDA announced theimplementation of its plan to help phase out the use of medicallyimportant antimicrobials in food animals for food production purposes.

U.S., Canadian pork, feed industries collaborate to study PED virus
More than 60 people representing the U.S. and Canadian pork,feed and other allied industries recently participated in a meeting on the porcineepidemic diarrhea (PED) virus hosted by the National Pork Board, and in collaborationwith the National Pork Producers Council, the American Association of Swine Veterinarians,the American Feed Industry Association, the National Grain and Feed Association,the National Renderers Association and the North American Spray Dried Blood andPlasma Producers, in Des Moines, Iowa. Although the disease does not affect humansor pork safety, it has infected and killed millions of young pigs on farms of allsizes in 27 states since May 2013 and in four Canadian provinces since January.

Soaring blood prices may plummet overnight
The U.S. is experiencing a reduction in market pigs due to the porcine epidemic diarrhea the PED virus. As pigs take about six months from birth to slaughter, and stocks of blood products destined for feed manufacturing (whole blood meal, animal blood plasma, and blood hemoglobin) take a few months to clear (or replenish), I find it reasonable for prices to be steadily increasing from now on.

Shrimp industry makes advancements in battle against Early Mortality Syndrome
Last month researchers at the University of Arizona had breakthrough in the mystery of the Early Mortality Syndrome, a disease which has resulted in massive losses in shrimp farming. A specific blend of 1-monoglycerides has been developed to fight both the viral and bacterial causative agents. Recently, the team successfully produced the first EMS-free cycle on an EMS-infected farms.
