Reuters' Ana Mano, Manuela Andreoni and Andre Romani reported that Abiove, a lobby group representing Brazil’s grain traders including ADM, Bunge and Cargill, announced it is quitting the Amazon soy moratorium, a pact barring soy purchases from deforested Amazonian farms after July 2008. The move follows a tax law change in Mato Grosso effective January 1, 2026, which removed benefits for moratorium participants. The departure weakens a key environmental tool credited with slowing Amazon deforestation. Conservation groups like WWF and Greenpeace criticized the decision, warning of increased climate risks and broken investor promises. Abiove said companies will individually uphold conservation commitments, while Mato Grosso’s farmer association welcomed the exit, calling the pact illegal and unfair.
