In the animal nutrition industry, we often focus on formulations, balancing nutrients to optimize performance and profitability. But, before formulation even begins, there’s a critical factor that determines the success of any feed: the quality of raw materials.
In my experience, even the most advanced formulations cannot compensate for poor-quality ingredients. Inconsistent nutrient profiles, contamination and variability in digestibility can all lead to underperformance at best and serious health issues at worst. Yet, in many cases, cost pressures drive decisions, leading some to prioritize price over quality — only to pay the price later in reduced efficiency, health problems and increased veterinary costs.
