Millstream Recycling, an Irish surplus-food recycler that specializes in reuse of foodstuffs from Irish food and drink manufacturers, recently signed a distribution deal with its new U.K. partner, SugaRich, in an effort to make a substantial increase in the quantity of byproduct feeds available to Irish farmers.

Typical products handled by the company include cakes and confectioneries with faulty packaging or that have been damaged during manufacturing, according to a report from AgriLand. Other food used include blends of chocolate, sweets and pastries.

“The U.K. has a high food production-to-farmer ratio and the large supply has slightly outweighed demand for such products over there in recent years," said Charlie Hogg, head of procurement at Millstream Recycling, in the report.

The products

Millstream and SugaRich will have two products with guaranteed availability, specifically targeting beef, dairy and pig farmers’ needs: MillRich Confectionery and MillRich Sweet Cake.

According to the Millstream Recycling website, MillRich Confectionery is a “cooked product with very high digestibility (which) means that animal can utilize more of this product compared with ordinary cereals.”

The website further says its benefits include being extremely palatable due to high sugar content which could result in a higher feed intake and lead to increased milk and meat production. The product has a 10 percent higher energy density than corn.

MillRich Sweet Cake 122 is a similar cooked product that is 7 percent higher in energy than corn and offers a high sugar ration that makes it extremely palatable.

Both MillRich Confectionery and MillRich Sweet Cake are available in 28-ton loads that can be delivered in bulk.

According to Millstream, the products provide many advantages over standard cereals including but not limited to various energy sources, no processing fees, high energy density, high oil content and they are free of genetically modified organisms.
