First cases of lumpy skin disease reported in southern Europe

For the first time, the virus causing lumpy skin disease (LSD) has been detected in the region, affecting a herd of cattle on the Italian island of Sardinia.

Presence of the lumpy skin virus LSD virus was confirmed in a cattle herd in central Sardinia last week.

Clinical signs were observed in seven of the 131 cattle at the farm, according to the official notification from Italy’s veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). The premises is located in the province of Nuoro.
