US dairy industry faces new threats and new opportunities

Animal disease concerns and labor shortages are persistent challenges, but rising protein demand and low feed prices are bright spots for the industry.

Animal disease concerns including New World screwworm (NWS) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), as well as labor shortages, are challenging the U.S. dairy industry, while low feed costs and the rise in protein consumption are boons, according to experts.

The first case of NWS in the U.S. in more than 60 years was confirmed June 4 in a three-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. There were five more cases within a week across Texas and New Mexico.
