Smallholder farms need specialized solutions to prevent ASF

Biosecurity strategies implemented by large-scale farms may not work as well for small and backyard farmers, according to new research from Charles Sturt University in Australia and Vietnam's National Institute of Animal Science.

Farms with fewer than 100 animals are commonplace in Vietnam, but the Vietnamese government determined during the country's first outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) that its biosecurity recommendations were less effective for these smaller-scale farms, according to Dr. Jennifer Manyweathers, an associate professor of epidemiology at Charles Sturt University School.
