Cargill gives $150,000 for PED virus feed research
As the firstanniversary of confirmation of the porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus in theUnited States nears, the National Pork Board continues to build an arsenal ofinformation based on its nearly $2 million in Pork Checkoff-funded researchfunded to date. This work will be aided by a decision by Cargill's animal nutritionand pork businesses to donate $150,000 for additional PED virus researchdirected by the National Pork Board.

Soaring blood prices may plummet overnight
The U.S. is experiencing a reduction in market pigs due to the porcine epidemic diarrhea the PED virus. As pigs take about six months from birth to slaughter, and stocks of blood products destined for feed manufacturing (whole blood meal, animal blood plasma, and blood hemoglobin) take a few months to clear (or replenish), I find it reasonable for prices to be steadily increasing from now on.

Protein quality in diets devoid of blood products
The ongoing crisis with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in the U.S. has brought several nutritionists against the dilemma of removing blood products from their piglet formulas. In my experiences, working with diets free or with minimal amounts of animal plasma (and any other blood products), the following ingredients appear to work effectively in keeping dietary protein digestibility at the highest possible levels.

The Wilbur-Ellis Feed Division, based in Vancouver, Wash., is stretching out from its traditional Western territory and continues to look at options for growth. Rob Fullerton, who after a 21-year stint with the company took over as feed division president on July 1, is excited to take over the leadership role as Wilbur-Ellis expands.
