AFIA to host FSMA regional seminars
To enable the industry to better understand the largest set of rules to impact feed and pet food since the 1950s, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) will host Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) regional seminars across the United States during the next 18 months.The first Phase I meeting will kick off the series July 27-28, in Sacramento, California.

NGFA urges rejection of ag transportation contract petition
The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) has urged the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to reject a petition from rail carriers urging that they be exempted from the statutory requirement to file agricultural transportation contract summaries.In a petition to the STB filed May 12 by Norfolk Southern Railway Company (NS) and CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT), the two carriers asked the agency to initiate a rulemaking to eliminate the current requirement to submit a summary of each contract for the transportation of "agricultural products ... and products (derived) therefrom."

FDA extends comment period on sanitary transportation rule
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has extended by 60 days the public comment period on its sanitary transportation rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act.The FDA said it approved an extension to the comment period as a result of requests from several groups, including the National Grain and Feed Association and National Oilseed Processors Association.

Animal food rule in FSMA needs revisions, says AFIA
Whether or not poultry feedmanufacturers are ready for the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the finalrule is expected to be issued August 30, 2015. Feed manufacturers, however, aresaying the rule in its present form is highly prescriptive and needs changingbefore final publication.

FDA to reconsider FSMA rules on brewers’ grain
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will revise proposed rules for livestock feed after hearing objections about costs that could be incurred by brewers who sell or donate their spent grain – a natural byproduct of the brewing process – from beer making to local farmers. The rules were proposed as part of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

Drug sponsors request FDA to withdraw drug application approval
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that five drug sponsors holding animal drug applications affected by Guidance For Industry (GFI) #213 have requested that FDA withdraw approval of a collective 19 animal drug applications because the products are no longer manufactured or marketed. Of these 19 applications, 16 are antimicrobials affected by GFI #213.

US Grains Council releases corn export cargo quality report
TheU.S. Grains Council recently released its 2013/2014 Corn Export Cargo QualityReport, which found the average aggregate quality of the corn exported early inthe 2013-14 marketing year was better than U.S. No. 2 on all grade factors. Inaddition, the incidences of positive levels of aflatoxin and deoxynivalenol(DON) test results were very low.
