FDA gains industry engagement on antimicrobial resistance plan
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the first of its progress reports on its strategy to promote the judicious use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals. All 26 drug manufacturers affected by Guidance for Industry (GFI) #213 have now agreed to fully engage in the strategy by phasing out the use of medically important antimicrobials in food-producing animals for food production purposes and phasing in the oversight of a veterinarian for the remaining therapeutic uses of such drugs.

AFIA applauds FDA’s plan to exempt animal food from FSMA rule
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has submitted comments to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration applauding the agency's proposal to exempt animal food from the Food Safety Modernization Act's intentional adulteration rule.The Focused Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration would require registered domestic and foreign food facilities to address hazards that may be intentionally introduced by acts of terrorism.

FDA issues draft guidance on nanotechnology use in animal feed
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a draft guidance addressing the use of nanotechnology in food for animals. The draft guidance was released in conjunction with three final guidances on the use of nanotechnology: in foods, in cosmetics and an agency-wide guidance outlining overarching considerations for all FDA-regulated products.

NGFA urges House to vote yes on customer protection bill
The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) and more than 30 other organizations urged members of the House of Representatives to vote yes on the Customer Protection and End-User Relief Act, (HR 4413) when it moves to the floor for consideration.In a letter, the organizations write that the legislation, which was unanimously approved by the Committee on Agriculture, provides important protections for futures customers.

AFIA requests animal food exemption in FSMA food registry
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) filed comments June 6 with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting an exemption of animal food from provisions made to the Reportable Food Registry provisions of the Federal Food Drug & Cosmetic Act as amended by the Food Safety Modernization Act.AFIA -- the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to representing the business, legislative and regulatory interests of the U.S. animal feed industry and its suppliers -- explained in the comments that "the statutory language does not mention 'animal food,' it addresses notification to 'consumers' and requires that notifications be published in 'grocery stores' only."
