Construction of a large new swine production complex in southern Vietnam will result from an agreement recently signed in Ho Chi Minh City.

Partners in this significant project are BAF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company and Muyuan Foods Co. Ltd of China, reports VietnamPlus.

According to this source, the agreement covers a high-rise and integrated pork complex in Tay Ninh, a province in the South East region of Vietnam.

When running at full capacity, annual production from the unit is forecast to be 1.6 million pigs, generating an expected revenue of around 10 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND; US$379 million).

Significant numbers of pigs — 20,000 — are planned to reach local markets from the complex by the end of 2027.

With a total investment of VND12 trillion, around 64,000 sows will be housed at the site. Its feed mill has a capacity of 600,000 metric tons (mt) per year.

Approval for the complex has already been obtained from the government of Vietnam and the provincial authority.

Forecast benefits of large-scale project

The significant boost to Vietnamese pork production generated by the complex is expected to strengthen the country’s food security, according to Vietnam Economy.

Official figures for the first seven months of this year put the volume of meat and meat imported by Vietnam at close to 535,000mt. Not only was this trade valued at more than USD1 billion, it was 11% higher than the same period of 2024.

For BAF Vietnam, the high-rise design of the unit represents optimum disease control and biosecurity — a major advantage for Vietnam, where disease outbreaks represent a major challenge to producers.

The design offers opportunities for more affordable pork for consumers, according to Muyuan Foods. The new complex will optimize land use, reduce labor requirement, and cut the costs of feed and logistics.

More on project partners

BAF Vietnam specializes in building and managing closed and fully integrated feed-farm-food value chains, according to the firm’s web site. It owns the first production unit in Vietnam to be awarded international certification for its livestock feed and animal management, and it operates meat processing factories.

Annual production of 20 million metric tons of compound feed for swine puts China-based Muyuan Food Group into the Top 3 feed companies in the world, according to Feed Strategy’s Top Feed Companies survey for 2023.

Founded in China in 1992, Muyuan Foods operates an integrated pork supply chain from feed production, through breeding and fattening to slaughter and meat processing. In 2023, the group had operations in 25 provinces of China, and 292 subsidiaries, reported World Benchmarking Alliance. The previous year, the group had sold 61.2 million pigs.

Profile of Vietnam’s pork sector

In recent years, the Vietnamese industry has been transitioning from traditional backyards to an intensive production model, according to a recent report by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

This has been achieved, in part, by the formation of partnerships between small-scale farms and large commercial enterprises. Rising pig prices have also encouraged an overall increase in pork output, such that the nation’s pig production was 3.8% higher at the end of June this year than 12 months previously.

Among the provinces with above-average expansion over this period was Tay Ninh, where the new BAF-Muyuan complex will be located.

However, animal diseases such as African swine fever (ASF) have presented a challenge to Vietnam’s pig producers since 2019. According to FAS, the scale of losses to the disease is under-reported by local media.

The latest update on the ASF situation in Vietnam puts the number of animals lost to the disease during the months of July and August of 2025 at more than 660,000. Government officials reported that the situation was under control, but new outbreaks had been confirmed in 32 of the country’s 34 provinces/cities during the preceding 21 days.
