As the EU and Mercosur sign a partnership agreement on trade, farmers in Europe have been calling for support to protect the future of European agriculture.

Immediate and concrete actions from European Union (EU) institutions to safeguard European food security was the overarching call from farmers protesting in Strasbourg, France, this week.

Six thousand farmers from 15 EU member states participated in the protests centered on the European Quarter of the French city, according to the European Voice of Farmers and Agri-Cooperatives COPA-COGECA. The body representing EU farmers reported that approximately 1,000 tractors blocked streets in the area.
