World Bank: Global corn, soybean prices at all-time highs
Corn and soybean prices are at all-time highs globally, according to a recent World Bank report, causing global food prices to increase by 10 percent and creating severe budget challenges in the Middle East and Africa. The World Bank said the ongoing drought and dry summers in the U.S., Russia and India are the major cause, resulting in $300-per-metric-ton corn — twice the price of 2010.

Brazil may export corn to China

Biomin has released its report on global mycotoxin research for 2011, focusing on global prevalence with a region-by-region breakdown of the various mycotoxins most important to animal and agriculture production. Seventy-four percent of the analyzed samples show the presence of at least one mycotoxin.

Chr. Hansen posts €30 million profit for second quarter 2011/2012
Chr. Hansen posted €30.4 million (US$39.8 million) in net profit in the company's second quarter ending February 29, an increase from the €24.5 million (US$32.1 million) earned in the second quarter of the 2010/2011 fiscal year, according to Chr. Hansen's latest financial report. The company saw organic growth in both its cultures and enzymes division (9 percent) and its health and nutrition division (11 percent) in the second quarter, but saw a drop in its natural colors division (3 percent).

How price elastic is demand for eggs?
When economists want to give an example of price inelasticity, eggs are frequently the commodity chosen to demonstrate how changes in price for eggs, either up or down, have relatively little impact on demand for eggs from consumers. The ban on conventional cages for housing layers in the EU that went into affect in January of this year will provide an interesting test case to see just how inelastic demand for eggs really is.

Saudi Arabia grain imports may jump 16 percent
Saudi Arabia's grain imports may increase by 16 percent in the 2011–2012 marketing year due to demand for animal feed, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. Imports will rise to 12.91 million metric tons from 11.16 million metric tons in the 2010–2011 year, raised from an October 2011 forecast of 12.16 million metric tons.

Viterra divests North American feed operations
Viterra Inc. has entered into an agreement with the newly formed Hi-Pro Feeds LP to divest its North American livestock feed operations, according to reports, including six feed mills and one pre-mix manufacturing facility in Canada, and six feed mills and one commodity blending site in the U.S. Hi-Pro is owned by the existing management team and Birch Hill Equity Partners.

Nonetheless, it suggests a remarkably consistent rate of expansion for the feed industry in recent times, following reported increases of about 1 percent in 2009 and almost 1.5 percent in 2010.

The world’s feed production has reached an estimated 873 million metric tons, according to a global survey commissioned by Alltech. Asia came in as the number one feed producing region, at 305 million metric tons, and China is the leading country with 175.4 million metric tons, according to the report.

Parliament group urges EU to enforce tougher feed import rules
Political group the Greens in the European Parliament are urging the European Commission to enforce tougher import rules on feed crops, saying that European markets are being undermined and domestic production has dropped because farmers can't compete with cheap imports. Specifically, the group has asked the Commission to look at its trade ties with Latin America and the Mercosur trade bloc, which grow a large part of the protein plants use in European animal feed.
