Saudi Arabia grain imports may jump 16 percent

Saudi Arabia's grain imports may increase by 16 percent in the 2011–2012 marketing year due to demand for animal feed, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. Imports will rise to 12.91 million metric tons from 11.16 million metric tons in the 2010–2011 year, raised from an October 2011 forecast of 12.16 million metric tons.

Imports will rise to 12.91 million metric tons from 11.16 million metric tons in the 2010–2011 year, raised from an October 2011 forecast of 12.16 million metric tons. Wheat imports are forecast to be a record 2.3 million metric tons, barley are expected to be 7.3 million metric tons and corn is forecast to come in at 2 million metric tons, according to the report. Saudi Arabia’s wheat crop is expected to drop to 1 million metric tons from 1.1 million metric tons in 2011.
