Uncertainty brings risk, opportunity for egg producers
While dismissing William Cramer’s challenge to California's Proposition 2 with prejudice, judge John Walter’s decision said, "Proposition 2 provides a person of ordinary intelligence more than a reasonable opportunity to know what is prohibited and provides explicit and objective standards to prevent discriminatory enforcement." Supply rationing will mean less poultry, eggs
Through the month of October, the average cost per 100 pounds of layer feed in the U.S. in 2012 was $15.73, according to Egg Industry Center estimates. The cost of feeding laying hens has more than doubled since 2006, when the average price was $6.92 per 100 pounds of feed. When grain prices rise to historically high levels, some buyers are tempted to lock in future supply fearing that prices will rise even higher, but this play can be very costly.

While the shortage of rain and dry conditions have and continue to wreak havoc on our nation’s farmers and livestock and poultry producers, there was one good thing that emanated from this summer’s crippling drought: a brighter light was shone on the federal requirement that diverts much of the nation’s dwindling corn crop into fuel.

Will Africa’s growing urban population have a taste for US poultry?
Industry economists and consultants are saying that Africa might soon become an important destination for U.S. poultry products. Africa’s growth accelerated after 2000, making it the world’s third-fastest growing region behind emerging Asia and the Middle East. Growing disposable incomes on the continent, as people begin to move upward on the economic ladder, make this region of the world a prime market for inexpensive poultry protein. By 2020 more than half of African households will have discretionary spending power.
