10 US companies reached or exceeded 1 million metric tons of compound feed production in 2018
Based on year-end data from 2018, the 2019 edition of Feed Strategy’s World’s Top Feed Companies report highlighted 102 compound feed manufacturing companies that manufactured 1 million metric tons of animal feed or more. Of that number, 9.8 percent are located in the United States.
According to WATT Global Media/Feed Strategy’s Top Feed Companies database, the top 10 North American companies produced more than 1 million metric tons of compound feed in 2018 or 4% of total global production.

North American feed production trends by species
The United States and Canada produced 236 million metric tons of animal feed in 2019 — accounting more than 21% of total global production. Here is the breakout of regional production by species:
- North American layer feed production hit 15.5 million metric tons of production.
- North America’s dairy feed production topped 28.3 million metric tons, accounting for 21.8% of the global total.
UNITED STATES
The U.S. ranked as the No. 1 feed producing country in the world, producing 214.4 million metric tons in 2019.
- Broiler feed production reached 48.5 million metric tons, which is 94% of total North American production.
- Pig feed production grew slightly over 2018 to reach 44.86 million metric tons.
- Beef feed production hit 61.09 million metric tons.
CANADA
Canada produced 21.6 million metric tons of commercial feed in 2019. It ranks as the 12th largest feed producing country.
- Broiler feed production reached 3.25 million metric tons.
- Pig feed production reached 21.6 million metric tons.
- Beef feed production came in at 1.2 million metric tons.
- Dairy feed production hit 4.2 million metric tons in 2019.
