The Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative (VPGC) has received approval for a special use permit to expand its grain facility from the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors.
The grain unloading site, which was opened in 2008, has served as a central location for Rockingham County farmers to buy and sell their grain, but expansion has made a new feed mill essential, Co-op President John King told the board.
“Since our founding, VPGC has grown more than 40%, and we continue to experience steady annual increases,” King said.
According to the Daily News-Record, the upgraded facility will be more than 200 feet tall when completed. The site already has rail access, but the expansion will allow for more truck shipments.
“We’re expanding the rail infrastructure to maximize the use of rail freight and reduce truck traffic as much as possible,” King said.
