Webinar explores plant proteins for young animal feed

Last week, I was honored to moderate the webinar, “How to choose the right plant protein for young animal feed,” sponsored by CJ Bio and presented by WATTPoultry, FeedStrategy, and WATT Global Media. You can view the entire webinar on demand; below are the conclusions from the two panelists.

Dr. Alfons Jansman from Wageningen Livestock Research, The Netherlands, discussed the topic of protein sources as functional ingredients in pig and poultry diets. He concluded with the following list of thoughts for further consideration:

  • Protein sources for pig and poultry diets differ in origin and way of processing and new sources arise associated with increases in demand.
  • The strict nutritional value of most protein sources has been well established.
  • Part of the functional (“non-strict nutritional”) effects of protein sources, for example, in relation to gut health and immune development, are known, but they are understood and applied to a limited extent.
  • Use of functional values of protein sources and other feed ingredients need to become a more integral part of diet formulation in the future.

After this presentation, Dr. Hans Stein from the University of Illinois, discussed the use of processed soybeans in diets for weaned pigs. His conclusions were:

  • The soluble carbohydrate fraction in soybeans can and should be removed for specialty products.
  • Quality control of specialty soybean products should consider the ratio of lysine to total crude protein to account for lost lysine due to thermal over-processing.
  • It is possible for refined soy products to replace animal protein sources in piglet diets.

During the question-and-answer section, which lasted more than 30 minutes, the panel of experts discussed how to differentiate between various processed soybean products and how to replace animal proteins and under what conditions giving actionable, hands-on advice.

It was a great event!
