Fishers await news on Peruvian ban amid worsening El Nino

Ongoing restrictions in key Peruvian fisheries could trigger shortages of fishmeal and fish oil this year, according to IFFO, The Marine Ingredient Organization.

Peru's Vice-Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture suspended fishing indefinitely in June, citing concerns about high water temperatures and an elevated percentage of juvenile fish in key coastal areas. Though there is still some chance the ban could be lifted or eased for the second half of the year, Enrico Bachis, market research director for IFFO, said he felt less optimistic this week.
