Michigan requires dairy, poultry farms to step up biosecurity

Michigan dairy and poultry operations will be required to step up their biosecurity efforts to control the spread of H5N1 in the state, according to an order issued May 1 by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Michigan dairy and poultry operations will be required to step up their biosecurity efforts to control the spread of H5N1 in the state, according to an order issued May 1 by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).

Since the first detection of the H5N1 virus in dairy cattle in Michigan on March 29, MDARD has identified additional dairy herds and poultry flocks that have tested positive in seven counties. The virus is highly transmissible between birds, but spread among dairy operations is not fully understood, the department said.
