After a decades-long hiatus, unexpected outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Hungary and Slovakia recently have raised fears of further spread in Europe.

Over the past month, cattle in Hungary and Slovakia have tested positive for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus. They are the first cases in these European states for more than 50 years.

In early March, the first Hungarian cases were reported by the veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
