AFIA begins drafting comments on FSMA animal food rule

The American Feed Industry Association’s (AFIA) Food Safety Modernization Act Working Groups on Hazard Identification/Preventive Controls and Records/Registration met in Tampa on January 16-17 to answer more than 40 questions posed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in its proposed rules for Current Good Manufacturing Practices and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals — also known as the FSMA animal food rule.Eight sub-groups have been formed to focus on the following areas of concern: preventive controls; hazard analysis; good manufacturing practices; pet food; supplier selection; environmental testing/monitoring; end product testing; and records.

European organic animal feed manufacturers face new regulations in 2012

European manufacturers of organic feeds for poultry already occupy a rather small niche market, but they fear it may not exist at all starting in 2012, unless the European Union regulators come to their rescue. The legal background to this problem was spelled out by Commission Regulation number 889/2008, which set detailed rules for implementing previous Regulation 834/2007 about organic production in European Union countries. The ruling made plain that a small percentage of non-organic ingredients would be permitted in organic animal feeds until 31 December 2011.

AFIA among groups providing industry feedback on FSMA animal food rule

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) on November 21 was among the industry groups attending the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) public meeting to provide industry feedback on the proposed rule to establish current good manufacturing practice and hazard analysis and risk-based preventive controls for animal food. The meeting, held in College Park, Md., was the first of three nationwide to be hosted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to answer questions and take part in dialogue surrounding the proposed animal food rule.

Veteran American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) employee Richard Sellers has been promoted to senior vice president at the association’s October board meeting in Des Moines, Iowa. Sellers previously served as AFIA’s vice president of feed regulation and nutrition.

FDA issues proposed FSMA rule to improve animal food safety

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a proposed rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) aimed at strengthening the safety of food for animals, including pet food and animal feed. This proposed rule would help ensure the safety of food for animals, as well as help prevent foodborne illness in humans and animals.

FDA urged to extend comment period on feed safety rules

The National Grain and Feed Association has urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to extend the comment periods on two sets of proposed rules issued by the agency to implement significant portions of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The NGFA did so, it said, because the agency still has not issued proposed regulations implementing the animal feed and pet food provisions of the law, whose requirements are expected to be closely linked and interrelated to the other two rulemakings for which the comment period extension was sought.

FDA issues guidance on color additives in animal food

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a document intended to help small businesses comply with regulations on declaring color additives in food for animals. The document, entitled Small Entity Compliance Guide - Declaring Color Additives in Animal Foods, provides background and questions and answers on the 2011 regulation requiring that all color additives subject to the FDA's certification process be listed on the product label for animal feed or pet food.

Farmers say EU regulations threaten crop quality, yield

The National Farmers' Union (NFU), which represents farmers and ranchers across England and Wales, warns that tightening European Union regulations on crop protection, plant breeding and genetic technology is threatening European crop yields and quality. NFU crops board vice-chairman Mike Hambly told European Commission officials, member state experts and industry stakeholders that regulations would also lead to an increased reliance on imports from areas of the world where standards of production cannot be guaranteed.
