DSM-Firmenich’s Hy-D authorized in EU for aquaculture and all animal species

Hy-D has been authorized in the EU for pigs, poultry and ruminants since 2024.

DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health’s Hy-D, 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D₃) produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 146008, has received new European Union authorization for use in salmonids, other fish species, and all other animal species. Hy-D has been authorized in the EU for pigs, poultry and ruminants since 2024.

This landmark decision by the European Commission means:

  • Commercial availability: Hy-D is officially authorized for commercial use as a nutritional additive in aquaculture and all animal feed across the EU, expanding access for feed producers, integrators and farmers as of December 31.
  • A first for EU aquaculture: This is the first time 25-hydroxycholecalciferol is approved for use in salmonids and all aquatic species, marking a significant advancement for the aquaculture industry.
  • Proof of safety from a unique production process: The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed the safety and efficacy of Hy-D produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 146008 for all animal species, as well as for consumers, users and the environment.

Hy-D, a vitamin D3 metabolite, supports optimal levels of 25-OH-D₃, providing all-round benefits in animal health and welfare, performance and productivity, and overall food quality. Proper usage of Hy-D can positively impact animal well-being and productivity.

“This new EU authorization for Hy-D is a significant milestone, underscoring its global relevance and reliability as a source of vitamin D for aquaculture and all animal species,” said Emrah Mazi, head of special nutrients at DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health. “We are thrilled about the opportunities this brings for our customers across Europe and beyond, empowering them to advance animal health and performance with confidence.”
