New York animal feed processor fined in worker death
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined New York animal feed processor Harbor Point Mineral Products $155,200 and cited the company for 21 violations of workplace safety standards following the May 11 death of employee Craig D. Bernier, who was fatally engulfed by cotton seed stored in a silo. Four of the violations were cited as willful — an intentional disregard for the requirements of the law or plan indifference to employee safety and health.

Vice President of Feed Regulation and Nutrition for the American Feed Industry Association Richard Sellers addressed feed mill managers at a recent seminar, focusing on the Food Safety Modernization Act and its ramifications on the industry. During the event, sponsored by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association’s Poultry & Egg Institute, Sellers said that the industry is experiencing some of the most significant changes in the Food and Drug Administration's regulation of feed since 1958.

Corn Growers Association, Grain and Feed Foundation release grain bin safety video
The National Corn Growers Association and the National Grain and Feed Foundation (the research and education arm of the National Grain and Feed Association) have unveiled a joint video project to promote awareness about grain bin safety on the farm. The two organizations teamed up in November 2010 to develop the video in response to an increase in U.S. fatalities and injuries associated with entry into grain bins.
