ForFarmers corporate affairs director, Nick Major, recently was elected president of FEFAC, the European feed manufacturers’ federation.

“It is a privilege to have been elected as president of FEFAC,” Major told WATTAgNet in an email. “The feed industry is at the same time the arable sector’s largest customer and the livestock farmer’s largest supplier. That means we have a significant contribution to make on the policy agenda across all sectors within agriculture and I look forward to playing my role in these discussions over the next few years.”

Along with regulatory policy, Major said animal feed safety, animal nutrition and sustainability are priorities for him and for FEFAC.

“Feed safety always remains a priority. Sustainability is also high on the list,” Major said. “I believe that many of the UN Sustainability Development Goals and other commitments such as the Paris Agreement can be achieved through increased sustainability of the livestock industry. I will be continually explaining the win-win relationship between improved resource efficiency through effective livestock nutrition and environmental impacts such a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.”

When it comes to regulations that concern the animal feed industry, Major said decisions must be based on science and technology.

“In general terms, I would like to see the regulatory framework shaped by science-based decision making. In order to secure a competitive European livestock industry, the sector needs to be able to adopt new technology,” he said.

For example, Major said innovation in animal nutrition is important in issues associated with antimicrobial resistance.

“So far, the feed industry has not really been vocal in the animal health domain, but it’s clear that animal nutrition makes a contribution to a reduced need for veterinary treatment and we should be able to sell that argument to livestock farmers,” he said.
