Inspire forum highlights complex nature of plant NSPs
The inaugural Inspire: Non-starchPolysaccharide (NSP) Forum got underway March 31 with 80 delegates from 23countries hearing presentations aimed at generating a deeper understanding ofthe complex structures of plant NSPs and the factors that influence theirnutritional impact. It was the first of three sessions across the three days ofthe Inspire forum looking, respectively, at aspects of the NSP substrate, theimpact of fibre on animal nutrition and feed enzyme solutions to improveefficacy and sustainability.

Kemin offers new testing service to evaluate oils, fats
Kemin is launching a new customer service toolto better assess the oxidativequality and nutritional value of oils and fats in feed. The LipidEvaluation Test provides nutritionists with accurate lipid profiles containingthe apparent metabolizable energy (AME) values and oxidative status andpotential in order to improve applications and combat unwanted variations ofoils and fats in animal nutrition.

Using pulses as alternative ingredients in poultry feed
Fluctuations in the price and availability of imported ingredients for feed have a marked effect on the overall cost of egg production. Poultry nutritionists continue to look at alternative ingredients for both economic and environmental reasons. Pulses, the seeds produced by leguminous plants, are one of these ingredients.

Premixes and nutrient levels in pig, poultry diets
As the intensive animal production industry has mostly shifted to confinement facilities, access to soil (minerals) and vegetation (vitamins) has been eliminated as a source of nutrients. Thus, to cover needs of micro-nutrients, commercial premixes of vitamins and trace minerals (usually added at 1 to 3 kg/MT) are used in every diet formulated today for pigs and poultry.

Protein quality in diets devoid of blood products
The ongoing crisis with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in the U.S. has brought several nutritionists against the dilemma of removing blood products from their piglet formulas. In my experiences, working with diets free or with minimal amounts of animal plasma (and any other blood products), the following ingredients appear to work effectively in keeping dietary protein digestibility at the highest possible levels.

High-fiber diets for broiler versus layer chicks
High-fiber ingredients, like distillers grains and wheat bran, are often priced suitably to feature at high levels in feed formulas for young poultry. But, adding such ingredients in diets for chicks from broiler or layer lines is bound to give different results, as evidenced by a recent study.

Effects of grinding high-fiber feed ingredients for swine diets
Researchers at Kansas State University recently conducted a series of studies to help determine the effects of fine grinding byproduct ingredients or whole diets. The main focus was on high byproduct diets with DDGS, wheat middlings and/or soybean hulls fed to both nursery and finishing pigs. This article examines their findings.

Feed quality: Controlling lipid rancidity
Oxidation of fats and oils (rancidity) is a natural process: a reaction between unsaturated fatty acids and free oxygen. Certain oils, such as soy and corn oil that are used frequently in animal feeds, are especially rich in unsaturated fatty acids.
