Carbon Emissions Reduction: Page 10
Dairy Cattle
Study: Feed supplement reduces GHG emissions from cows
Livestock emissions are a considerable contributor to greenhouse gas emissions however, until recently, there has been no commercial, scalable solution to reduce methane emissions from cows.

Study looks to reduce methane gas emissions in cattle
Seeking to mitigate the greenhouse gas contributions of Alberta, Canada’s agricultural sector, a University of Lethbridge-led study has been granted $1.1 million by the federal government’s Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program.
Feed Production by Region
New method converts biogas into animal feed ingredient
The Technical Research Centre of Finland has come up with a method to convert methane-rich biogas into high-protein raw material for animal feeds.
Animal Feed Manufacturing
EU action on climate change mostly backed by feed sector
The European Compound Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) has generally welcomed the package of measures recently announced by the European Commission, which aims to drive the EU toward a low-carbon economy.
Feed Additives
Study shows how to reduce methane emission from ruminants
An international team of researchers has explained how a new compound works to reduce the environmental impact of ruminant animals by cutting the production of the greenhouse gas, methane.
Animal Feed Manufacturing
Feed industry technology lowering livestock emissions
Improvements in the efficiency of animal agriculture over recent decades have dramatically reduced greenhouse gas emissions created by livestock, according to Dr. Frank Mitloehner, professor and air quality specialist in the department of animal science at University of California-Davis.

Animal feed trends for the week ending December 10
The past week brought us news about greenhouse gas emissions, feed additives, the European Commissions’ Circular Economy Package, China’s animal feed sector, Estonia’s largest feed mill, and Nutreco’s latest acquisition.
Equipment
Morillon Compact Hydrascrew silo unloader
The Morillon Compact Hydrascrew silo unloader is designed to discharge difficult flow material from flat bottom silos. With low power consumption and fewer carbon emissions, the unloader features direction transmission with a hydraulic motor.
Dairy Cattle
Cow-calf stage significant contributor of greenhouse gases
The cow-calf stage is the most significant contributor of greenhouse gases during beef production, according to a paper for the Journal of Animal Science which showed that overall beef production has a carbon footprint ranging from 10.7 kg to 22.6 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per kg of hot carcass weight. In the cow-calf phase, the cow gives birth and nurses the calf until the calf is six to 10 months old.
Business & Markets
UK biofuel crops market outlook may be improved
A Home Grown Cereals Authority-led revision to regional greenhouse gas emissions figures could deliver financial benefits to growers and reopen market opportunities for arable crops in the biofuels supply chain, according to the group. The HGCA has been working with the Department for Transport and an industry consortium to revise a report that details the ability of UK regions to meet legally binding greenhouse gas emissions criteria under the Renewable Energy Directive.
Carbon Emissions Reduction
Delacon studies feed additives as carbon footprint reducers
The key to managing the livestock industry’s carbon footprint while continuing to supply the demand for meat likely lies in continued increases in efficiency, according to Delacon, which has focused on improved performance and economic profit, and the reduction of ammonia and odor emissions, in its product development.
